They’re Coming Home!

Save the Date! The finds from Malmesbury’s Big Athelstan Dig have been cleaned and the brilliant team at Cotswold Archaeology are busy assessing them. They’ll all be back on display in Malmesbury Town Hall in a special Athelstan 1100 event on the weekend of the 15th and 16th March 2025 from 10:30am to 4:00pm. With explanations from the experts, more information about each of the test sites and the overall findings from the amazing Malmesbury's Big Athelstan Dig weekend in July. Free to Attend. The Athelstan Pilgrim Way launches its 3rd & 4th sections with a talk by Martin Palmer. The event also launches the Artist in Residence position held by Sheona Beaumont with a display of photographic work. Following the talk, there will be a short walk to St James the Great, Dauntsey. Talk: Aldhelm and his Legacy – 675 to 2025

Aldhelm was Athelstan's hero and 2025 is the 1,350th anniversary of Aldhelm becoming the first Abbot of Malmesbury Abbey. We are partnering this talk being organised by the team at Malmesbury Abbey. Malmesbury historian Tony McAleavy will expand on Aldhelm's legacy and why Aldhelm is still important. Tony sold out his talks at Athelstan 1100 in 2024. Not to be missed!

*We also want to help raise funds to ‘Save our Abbey Roof’. There is no charge to attend this special event but you will be asked to give generously to the Malmesbury Abbey Roof Fundraising appeal.

Walk: The Athelstan 1100 Pilgrim Way - Malmesbury to Kingston 2025

Walk: The Athelstan 1100 Pilgrim Way - Malmesbury to Kingston 2025

In 2024 Malmesbury in North Wiltshire celebrated the 1100th anniversary of Athelstan becoming king. On September 4th 2025 Kingston upon Thames is celebrating the 1100th annivesary of Athelstan's coronation as the King of Wessex and Mercia. 

To highlight the connection between these events the Athelstan Pilgrim Way, a popular network of footpaths and cycleways across North Wiltshire, is being extended to Kingston for a special event; a symbolic walk with a crown from Malmesbury to Kingston, arriving in Kingston on the anniversary of the coronation.

The walk will take place over 11 days - divided into three blocks of days - and starts on Monday 18th August. It arrives in Kingston at 10:30am on Thursday 4th September (with a cycling group) to participate in a reception. You can choose to to join in for the whole walk or just a day. Cycle: The Athelstan 1100 Pilgrim Way - Malmesbury to Kingston 2025

In 2024 Malmesbury in North Wiltshire celebrated the 1100th anniversary of Athelstan becoming king. On September 4th 2025 Kingston upon Thames is celebrating the 1100th annivesary of Athelstan's coronation as the King of Wessex and Mercia.
