After the decisive victory at Brunanburh Athelstan faced no further military challenges in Britain. His final military adventure was to send a fleet in 939 to Flanders to support the Frankish ruler. Louis IV. Athelstan died in Gloucester on 27 October 939 after fourteen years on the throne. The body was brought to Malmesbury in line with his instructions for his burial.
